Podcasting 101: A Step-by-Step Guide to Making and Promoting Your Own Podcast

If there's one thing the Internet is fabulous for, it's giving virtually everyone the ability to be heard. Long gone are the days of controlled media messages sent out by the powerful few, information available only by way of the Tom Brokaw and Time Magazine. Thanks to the World Wide Web and an influx of user-friendly software, now even old Mr. Jones down the street can project his voice across oceans.

Podcasting is one of the newest, freshest ways for him to do that.

Think of it like an audio blog; a podcast is a recorded program similar to radio (sans commercials, of course) made available via mp3 files on websites or RSS feeds. But unlike radio, users can download these programs onto an iPod or any other mp3 device and listen at their own convenience. Also unlike radio, there are no FCC standards to regulate the content; a podcast can say anything about any topic at any time. It's revolutionary, really.

And by following a few fairly simple steps, anyone can make them.

1. Get a Niche. Maybe you already know precisely what your podcast will cover: you want to host your own music countdown, promote your friend's newest invention or discuss the nitty-gritty political issues of your home state. That's great, get to it! But for those who aren't so sure, who know only that they want to give podcasting a shot, it's a good idea to check out what other hosts are up to. iPodder.org and Podcast.net are home to tons of podcasts on a variety of topics; download several shows on issues that interest you and see what's being done and how you might do it differently. Don't be afraid of creativity; try putting a new spin on an old issue or blowing the doors off a topic that's only rarely, if ever, covered. Listeners will continually come to your podcast if you offer something fresh and vivid.

2. Get a Plan. Once you've discovered your niche, get down to details. Though the beauty of podcasting is the ability to buck the rules of traditional audio broadcasts, it sometimes helps to consider what made those rules so traditional in the first place; this will help you map your show much more effectively.

First, consider format: how long will the podcast be? Will you have guests or take phone calls? Will you play music of any sort? Think about how other shows similar to yours function, remember all the radio programs you've heard before. Keep in mind that while you can certainly forget all the rules, you want to keep your listeners listening; a you-only six-hour program about cheese might not be the easiest thing to digest.

Once you've figured out the format, divide and plan the show accordingly. If you're hosting a talk show, for instance, decide how many (and which) topics you'll cover and how long each topic will get. And don't forget to break it up; since podcasts have no commercials, you'll need a way to give listeners a breather between issues -- consider using some sort of music or audio clip. Also, make sure to prepare opening and closing remarks for the entire thing, maybe even give listeners a sneak peek at the next program; identifying yourself, as well as referring to future episodes, is a great way to remind listeners to come back for more.

3. Get Tech. You've got the idea in theory, now get it into practice. You don't need to be a tech genius to record your podcast, but you definitely need some basic recording equipment and software. First and foremost, you'll need a microphone. While it's entirely possible to use your computer's built-in mic to record your voice, it's a much better idea to invest in an external mic; the sound will be that much cleaner and professional. Shure makes several microphones perfect for voice recording (try an SM57 or SM58), and you can find these at very affordable prices on eBay or any music shop that sells pre-owned instruments. And while you're scoping out microphones, grab a pair of headphones to track the sound; you'll want some unidirectional that covers your entire ear. Again, eBay and used music shops are the best way to go for these.

Now you just need the software. Mac owners tend to use GarageBand, as it comes with the newest operating systems, but PC users or those with no recording software already on their computer tend to use Audacity, a free audio recording/editing program that can be downloaded online (audacity.sourceforge.net); it's a fairly simple program, but tons of tutorials are available to walk you through its functions. Just remember to also download the free mp3 encoder as well; you'll need that to turn your podcast into the most easily consumable file type.

Once you've recorded your podcast and edited out any mistakes (and added music or audio samples), you'll need to minimize the file size (by either lowering the sample or bit rate), convert it to mp3 and upload it onto your website. Don't have a website? No worries! Our media (www.ourmedia.org) has recently begun providing users with completely free bandwidth and storage for podcasts and other sorts of media. It's a great way to get your podcast online while avoiding fees (if the podcast starts to gain a following, however, you'll definitely want to consider creating a website for it specifically).

4. Get Heard. So you've got the first episode of your podcast recorded, edited, uploaded and ready to go. Now you just need some listeners -- but how do you find them? The most obvious and widely used way of attracting listeners to your podcast is by submitting it to podcast directories and search engines, of which there are hundreds (run a Google search to find them). And while directories and search engines are a definite means to getting your voice out there, it's sometimes worth looking into alternate methods of promotion if you really want to take your podcast to the next level. Get involved in online forums and blogs that are similar to your topic and trade links with like-minded people; there's a whole community of podcasters out there eager to check out your program. And if your podcast has a regional slant, try getting some publicity in local papers or magazines. Though it may seem difficult, it's often entirely possible to get mentioned in print media simply by asking. Create a press release and personal bio for your podcast and send it off to as many media sources as possible; you'll be surprised at what may transpire.

Top Bluetooth Wireless Headsets

Bluetooth headsets make up one of the fastest wireless markets here in the US and around the world. Headsets with Bluetooth wireless technology are capable of working with a variety of other Bluetooth enabled devices such as cell phones, PDAs, and digital music devices (like the iPod). Unlike conventional headsets, Bluetooth headsets do not require wires of any sort, but rather receive information from your portable device through 2.4GHz radio waves. The range of communication for most headsets is somewhere around 10 feet, which is usually plenty long.

Not surprisingly, there are a wide variety of Bluetooth headsets out there, and it really comes down to tastes in styles and preferred features as to which one is right for you. You'll want to make sure, for instance, that your Bluetooth device - whether it be an iPod, laptop, or PDA - will work with your chosen head phones. Here we list below some of the most popular Bluetooth headsets and their relevent features.

Logitech Mobile Bluetooth Headset

Logitech's Bluetooth headset is a real competitor in the market. It is a solid product with a dependable brand name, fully capable of providing sound connection between your cell phone and the headset. The device is entirely compatible with most major Bluetooth phones, but you may have to look into its compatibility with other devices. Like most headsets, the device can clip easily to either ear. It comes with an adjustable, swing-out boom that includes a noise-blocking microphone. The battery unit is rechargeable and is capable of giving you about 7 hours of talk time.

Motorola Bluetooth Headsets

Motorola currently has two stylish Bluetooth headsets on the market: the HS810 and HS820, and one soon to be released: the HS850. The HS810 and HS820 are very similar in style and shape.

Both devices are, of course, Bluetooth enabled and can thereby communicate with Bluetooth 1.1 compliant devices, including handsets, PDAs and computers. The device is compatible with the Motorola V600 and V710 phones. The HS810 and HS820 both weigh about 20 grams, and the HS820 has a slightly longer talk time range of 6 hours, compared with the HS810's 5 hours max. They both can run on standby for 100 hours. The HS820 has the ability to communicate with your phone up to 33 feet away, and is equipped with a couple nice features: conference call and voice dialing. The HS810 sells for $99.00 and the HS820 for $79.00.

Information concerning the newest headset by Motorola, the HS850, has just recently been released. Those lucky enough to have tested and reviewed this device have, so far, given it high marks. Like it predecessors, the HS850 has a simple yet attractive design. The main casing is black, with silver around the control area (image below). One of the more innovative features of this device is the flip-on connection system that enables the headset to connect with your phone as soon as you flip it open.

Jabra FreeSpeak Bluetooth Headsets

Jabra, a leading provider of hands-free communication devices is optimistic about its newest headset the Jabra FreeSpeak FS258 released recently in Malaysia. Weighing only 23 grams, the FS258 is the lightest behind-the-ear device produced by Jabra. The company is encouraged by a new trend in the US towards banning the use of cell phones while driving is some states, such as New Jersey.

The Magic Number for Your Keyboard Success

Are You Looking for a Magical Solution?

Are you struggling with trying to figure out how to play well?

Are you feeling overwhelmed by so much to practice, so little time?

Are you looking for a way to know what to practice so that you will improve quickly?

An adult student named Liz told me that she finds that she cant decide what to practice because there are too many choices.

Sue often complains that although shes learned many songs, she can no longer play them.

Shes frustrated because she loves practicing her new pieces every day, and wishes she could pick up something from the past and just play it.

Has this happened to you?

Its Not Rocket Science

When the young man asks, How do I get to Carnegie Hall?
the elderly New Yorker responds, Practice, practice, practice.
Notice that the word practice is stated three times.

It takes 3 weeks to establish a good habit, but only 3 days to lose it.
Every time you focus on one specific musical goal for 21 straight days, you will establish a new keyboard success habit.

Establishing Your Keyboard Success Habit

Here are the three things you need to do to establish your keyboard success habit.

  1. Make a choice
Success does not come from practicing all of your songs, exercises and/or classical pieces all the time. There simply arent enough hours in the day for this.
In order to get great results, you need to pick one piece that you really like and want to learn to play well. You will still practice your other music, but now you have selected one special piece that you want to master, memorize or both.

  2. Focus on your number one priority
You need to practice your selected special piece every single day. Sometimes this will be the only thing you practice. Other days, when more time is available, you can give attention to your other musical material. The most important thing is that you concentrate single-mindedly on your number one priority: to practice your special piece daily.
  3. Make a commitment and stick to it
Promise yourself that you will keep your commitment to practicing this one special piece for 21 consecutive days, just three weeks. You will amaze yourself when you hear how much better you sound. Your confidence will improve too!
Action Exercises
Here are three steps you can take immediately to put these ideas into action.

First, select one special piece, practice it every single day for three weeks. All of your other musiccan receive your attention after you focus on your number one priority.

Second, remember that once you see the great results of your efforts, youll be so excited that youll repeat this process with another one of your favorite pieces.

Third, take this method up one more notch by practicing your special selected piece every day for three months. Your musical success is guaranteed!

Create computer Games - Get Started on Creating Your Own Virtual Worlds

Ive always loved video games, ever since I first played them on a friends computer in the afternoon after elementary school. Theres something almost magical about the fact that we can move images around and interact with virtual worlds, a living fantasy presented for us to interact with however we please. Ive also always wanted to make games myself but, until recently, didnt have the technical knowledge to do so. Now, Im a second year software engineering student, so if I werent able to code a game without too many dramas thered be something drastically wrong. But what about the common person: the person for whom the term memory leak conjures up images of their grandfather, pipeline is where the water flows, and blitting is unheard of? Well, everyone can get in on the game creation process, and you dont even need to learn real programming to do so.

So where do games start? With an idea. Games, like all fiction, require an idea to be successful. Sure, in the same way you can just sit down and write a story without foresight, you can jump on in and slap a game together. However, unless you get ridiculously lucky, the best works are usually the ones that have been well thought out beforehand.

There are two methods of planning a project. You can start from a known technological standpoint and build your project on top of that or you can just go for the design, add as many features and ideas as you like, and then remove the ones that you cant use when youve decided on the technology youre going to implement the game with. In general, the second type is probably the best one to go with when designing games. When youre first starting out however, the first option will save you many headaches.

So, for a first game youre going to want a pretty simple idea. Dont get me wrong, crazy-go-nuts game ideas are fantastic, and there should be more of them out there, but youre not going to be able to create a real world simulator with fifty billion virtual people all interacting real time with your actions having a butterfly effect on the future of the virtual universe when its just your first game. Really. Many people try it; none that I know of have succeeded. Imitation is the best way to start out. Simple games such as Space Invaders, Tetris, Pacman or even Pong are great places to start. All are largely simple to create but have some inherent challenges. Pacman for example, requires path finding for the ghosts. I recommend that you start even simpler than that for your very first attempt. Space Invaders is a nice point to jump in. You can make a simple, complete game without much effort and its almost infinitely extensible.

If youre stuck for an idea, pick a genre that you enjoy. Do you love adventure games such as Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, Space Quest, Kings Quest etc.? Design one of those. Are you into fighting games like Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat and so on? Come up with an idea for that. Do you like first person shooters such as Quake, Half Life or Doom? I dont recommend it as a first project, but you can always give it a go. Feel free to be as generic as you like, this is a learning experience after all.

Now that you have your idea its time to flesh it out. Dont worry about the technology or the fact that you may not know how to actually implement a game just yet, just grab yourself some paper and a pencil and go crazy with ideas. Describe the main characters, game play, goals, interactions, story, and key mappings, anything you can think of. Make sure you have enough detail so that someone can read through the notes and play through the game in their head with relative accuracy. Changing game design during the coding process is almost always a bad idea. Once its set, it should remain set until the tweaking phase (Ill go into this more later) or youre likely to enter development hell, where the project goes on and on; more and more work is done with less and less outcome.

At the end of this period of your game creation, you should have the following:

-A written outline of the games characters and possibly a sketch or two (be they space ships, yellow circles, cars or the prince of the dark kingdom of Falgour, you need to know who or what the player will be and who they will compete against)

-A written outline of the story (if there is one, this isnt too vital for Space Invaders or Tetris, but for Uber Quest: An Adventure of Awesomeness its a really good idea)

-A description of game play, written or storyboarded. Storyboards are visual representations of ideas. Draw your characters in actions, with arrows showing the flow of action and short written descriptions detailing the events occurring in your image (because some of us arent fantastic artists and our images can be a little open to interpretation)

Now that you have a fleshed out idea, its time to work out how this will all get put together. If youve gotten to this point and are worried that youre going to have to spend years learning complex programming languages in order to implement your idea, fear not! Others have already done the hard yards for you. There are many RAD (Rapid Application Development) Tools available for game creation, a number of which are available for free online. Some of them still require you to learn a scripting language (a simplified programming language made for a specific task) but in general this isnt too complicated or involved. Ive compiled a brief list of some of these I have found at the end of the article. The free ones are listed first, organized by game genre.

Well, that should be enough to get you started in the creation of your game. The most important thing to remember once youve gotten this far is that you need to complete your game. Many people start a project and then lose interest and it fails, or they keep moving on to one new project after another without finishing anything. Start small, build a working (if simple) game that is, above all else, complete. When you get to this stage you will always have a huge number of things that you wish to change, fix etc. but youll get a great feeling from knowing that it is, in its way, finished.

From this point, you can start the tweaking phase. Play your game a few times and ask others to do the same. Take note of what isnt fun or could be better and change things here. At this stage, it is more important than ever to keep backups of previous versions so that if a change doesnt work you can go back and try something different without losing any of your work. It is at this point that you can add all new features, improve graphics and sounds, whatever you please, safe in the knowledge that youre working on a solid foundation.

When youre happy with your game, why not share it with the world? There are many cheap or free places out there for you to host your files on and then you can jump on link lists and forums and let everyone know about your creation. Well, I hope that this has been a helpful introduction into the art of creating games. Its a great deal of fun, and can open whole new avenues of creative expression for you to explore. Jump in and have fun!

Four Critical Web design Rules

When creating a new website or redesigning an existing site, there are four critical rules which the designer should follow to make the site effective and functional - and successful.

1. Easy to Read

When building a website, the first thing you need to be sure of is that your website is easy to read. When you write content, remember that most web site visitors don't read every word of a page - in fact, they only scan pages to find what they want.

Break up Your Content

Break up your pages and use headers between major ideas so people scanning your site can find what they want quickly. Use meaningful headers between each paragraph or major idea - this helps with SEO. Headers should be created with the H1 through H4 tags for SEO. Always use good writing structure. Additionally, avoid long paragraphs that run on. You should break up any long paragraphs.

Color and Fonts

To help readability, use high contrast colors between font and background. Black text against a white background may seem stark, but it is very readable. To make a website easy on the eyes, try an off-white background and a dark gray (almost black) text color.

Things to avoid with content color:

  • Avoid vibrant background colors like purple or yellow. Such back colors make text difficult to read.
  • Avoid using an image behind your text.
  • Avoid using bright text colors on bright backgrounds.

Fonts Matter One simple statement covers the font issue:

  • Simple fonts are the best; the more fancy the font, the harder it is to read.
Since many browsers only have the standard font set, use standard fonts. In reality, there is no "standard", but there are certain fonts that are installed on most browsers. These include Arial, Verdana, Tahoma and Times New Roman. Your readers will see something different than you see if you use other fonts.

Standard Compliant Browser for Development

When developing and testing your site, use a Standards compliant browser like FireFox. If you develop your site to be standards compliant, it will work in most browsers, including MS Internet Explorer (IE). It is recommended that you test your site using the latest and last browser versions of IE (IE6 and IE7). To run multiple versions of IE on the same machine, TredoSoft.com has a free installer that will install multiple versions of IE. It works great!

2. Simplify Navigation

The menus and links make up the navigation that the visitor uses to get from page to page in a site. Always plan a site around how people will get from page to page. A visitor to your site should be able to get to what they want within three clicks of their mouse.

Multiple navigation points makes it easy to find things. Repeat the top menu and at the bottom. Also create a left or right menu.

Using links within your text to other areas on your site. You can create links so that they are good for search engine optimization (SEO). There are generally two ways to create links within your text:

  1. The wrong way: "For search engine optimization techniques, click here."
  2. The right way: "Good techniques for search engine optimization are important to use."

Using link text (anchor text) that describes what the link is about is the best way. Search engine web crawlers (programs that automatically index the contents of websites) visit your site, they "read" links. Spiders can index descriptive links into a subject or keyword category. Spiders have nothing to work with when reading a "click here" until it reaches the linked page. This is Cross Linking - use it as much as possible when it makes sense to do so when writing your content.

3. Consistent design

At most, one or two layouts should be used in your site design. As a reader browses your site, they should be able to get used to looking in the same place for your navigation, for your sub-navigation and for your content. That's all there is to say about that.

4. Lower Page Weight is Better

Page weight is the total size of a page on your site in bytes - code, text and images. Your site's page weight makes a big difference to your viewers. Lighter page weight is better for your readers because the page will download faster. The faster a page downloads, the faster they will get to the content.

What is Means to be Light

  • No large images. (unless the site's purpose is to showcase images, art or photos)
  • Fewer images are better.
  • Optimize images for the web at no more than 72 dpi
  • Use as small an image dimension as possible for the given design.
  • Use a table td bgcolor attribute or a background-color style attribute for solid color backgrounds.
  • Make gradients horizontal or vertical (not diagonal) so that you can use a small image "strip" and repeat it.

How "Heavy" Should a Web Page be?

Certain studies show that 64K is a good maximum webpage size. 64K is a maximum, however it is still, in my opinion, really big! The smaller the page, the better. 25K is good, 15K is even better. There is a balance between design and function. It is a good idea to focus more on function.

Try putting pages on your web host server as you build your site so you can test it as you go. For pages online, you can test the page weight to be sure you are on track.

Ways to make pages lighter:

  • Use linked style sheets
  • Use DIVs instead of TABLEs where possible
  • Use simple repeating backgrounds for effect

Summary

Visitors to your website should be able to find what they are looking for within about three clicks. Making a site easy to read with consistent page design, and easy to navigate will make it easy to find information. You will be on the way to building a readable, effective, functional and hopefully successful website if you follow these rules.

What To Do When Windows Won't Boot

When Windows fails to boot it is normally caused by you installing a program or device and it has caused a conflict with one or more other programs.

This will no doubt give you plenty of heartaches if you're not certain which program caused Windows to not boot up.

If you recently installed a program or application and know where it was installed, you may be in much better shape as for as correcting the error.

Here are common ways to correct the problem of your computer not completely booting up or not booting up at all.

If your computer will not boot-up at all, hopefully you have made a good emergency boot disk. You can always make a windows startup disk by creating one from another computer running Windows 98 or Me.Perform the following if your computer won't Boot-Up At All.

FIRST......Put your boot floppy disk in the floppy drive and turn on the PC.On some computers, you may have to access the bios and select the Boot priority to your A: drive.

Save any changes and select "Start computer without CDROM support" and press Enter.Once you are at the A prompt, type dir c: and press enter.

You can also type "Sys C:" to hopefully restore files needed to boot up your computer.

Making A Windows XP Bootable Floppy

Windows XP users should create a boot disk now by placing a formatted blank diskette in the A: drive, open Windows Explorer to the C:,select Tools,Folder Options ,show Hidden files and and folders, then View Tab.

Now you uncheck "Hide Protected Operating System Files (recommended). You will see a warning and click Yes and click OK.Copy the files ntldr,ntdetect.com and boot.ini onto the disk.Remove the disk and label it the Windows XP Boot Disk.

After making your boot disk, recheck "Hide protected operating system files and folders (recommended)" in the Folder Options dialog box.

To use the disk when Windows XP won't boot, place the disk in the drive, and then re-boot,the computer, Windows simply bypass the basic boot files on the hard drive and continue to boot up.

SECOND....Repair your Registry by selecting Start,Run and typing "scanregw /fix" and press enter. This will fix any damage done to the Registry. You can also restore your registry which replaces your current registry with an earlier copy that was backed up by your computer.Click on Start,Run and type "scanregw /restore and press Enter.

To repair your Windows 98 Registry, hold down the CTRL key as you start the PC and select "Command Prompt Only".Type "scanreg /fix" and press Enter and "scanreg/restore" to restore a previousely saved copy of the Registry.

If you have Windows XP,press F8 after rebooting the PC should Windows freeze while booting up. You can select "Last Known Good Configuration" after rebooting to allow the computer to boot the last backed up files. And you can choose "Safe Mode" to remove any files you know caused the operating system to hang up.

How to Build The Perfect bowflex Home Gym

If you've recognized that you just can't get to the gym as many times a week as you thought, but you still don't want to give up on completing some kind of workout to maintain a decent fitness level, then you are likely one of the millions of people whose needs can be met by purchasing home gym equipment. The question for many is what to buy. In our society where many people value nutrition and fitness, a home gym or treadmill is a perfect solution. One reason so many people delay their purchase is that there's so many choices, so much hype and so much cheap exercise equipment. Before you make any purchase, read through this article to help you navigate one of the internet's oldest and best home fitness equipment sites.

bowflex is regarded as one of the pioneers and biggest success stories in the home fitness equipment industry. Many people have been purchasing bowflex products to equip their gyms for many years. What most don't realize is that the bowflex Website is much more than a place to shop for exercise equipment. The bowflex website allows their visitors to select the exercise equipment that best meets their fitness goals. With bowflex products, you have the ability to use the very same equipment in your own home, that is used in commercial gyms. Not only does the site provide in depth information on their products, where you can request a free DVD information kit, you will also find bowflex accessories, use the space planning tool, purchase nutrition and strength training programs.

Choosing Equipment

Like many commercial exercise machines, bowflex products may be chosen for specific fitness needs. When you choose any machine from the listing, you will be able to see the product, read a full description with products specifications, look through the additional options and find out about financing.

The bowflex line is not just Power Rods and TreadClimber. It is a full spectrum of products that are designed to allow you the same workout you would get at the gym. For instance, if you are looking for equipment to work on your abs, arms, legs and so forth, check out the Ultimate 2. For strength training exercise equipment, you may want to consider the Xtreme 2 SE and SE.

One of bowflex's latest pieces of equipment is the Revolution Home Gym. Also available in the XP model which focuses on your upper body, the Revolution Home Gym is literally a gym full of equipment in one machine.

If youre a couch potato or someone with little to no experience in purchasing home exercise equipment, the bowflex website offers a home gym comparison. The comparison guides you in deciding which bowflex meets your personal fitness goals.

TreadClimber

The bowflex marketing strategy is copy with a hard sell. You could easily be convinced, that having a Treadclimber or any other piece of their equipment is the only way to health, wealth and great looks. It's as if they feel all other exercise and diet programs are a waste of your time when it's certain that committed use of the Treadclimber, Revolution or other bowflex equipment will ensure weight loss and lasting improvements to your health. The Treadclimber offers readouts that list equivalencies to real actions, like distance traveled and number of calories you may have burned.

One of my favorite features on the website is being able to take a virtual look at the several models of the bowflex home fitness equipment. Many of the questions one might have are answered in the FAQs.

Accessories

Other equipment options are also listed. If you want to add free weight workouts to your exercise equipment, dumbbells are available online as well. In fact, all the bowflex accessories are presented. Everything they think youll need for a home gym set up is included: interactive training software, the bowflex Pilates Kit, machine mats and so on.

Besides being a sales site, you will also find exercises, tools to make a space plan for your own home gym, product and assembly manuals and of course the warranty information. One of the keys to bowflex program's success is their understanding of their customers' needs their 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. The people at Nautilus (who own the bowflex brand) want you to succeed and will help you get the best equipment and workout to fit your needs.

Nutrition

The nutrition page features Champion Nutrition products that include a Low Carb program and a Muscle Maintenance program. The nutrition bandwagon is relatively empty. While stores like GNC cater to this interest, you wont usually see it at the gyms. bowflex, cashing in on your concern, does make these products and information easily accessible. You dont just stand in a store reading the back of a box that has a description you cant understand. At this part of the bowflex website, you get a special savings just for being a bowflex customer. In essence, they put their money where your mouth is.
